About the event
David Campbell and Nick Bond will be leading this walk around The Burgh, starting from the recreation ground car park at TQ039088. We will begin by scanning the water meadows for any wintering Bewick's Swans then pass the treatment works to check for Siberian Chiffchaff, before walking to the raptor hotspot that is The Burgh. Owls and harriers will be our main target there, so we will stake out the best area of rough grassland at dusk.
The area is a well known hunting ground for birds of prey in winter, with possibilities including Marsh and Hen Harriers, Short-eared Owl, Barn Owl, Merlin, Red Kite, Peregrine and Common Buzzard. It's also a fantastic place to clap eyes on some Brown Hares, an emblematic species of the South Downs National Park. There will be a good variety of farmland birds to see too, including a good chance of Grey Partridge.
Walking distance approx. 4 miles
Please bring a torch as we will be returning in the dark, getting back to the meeting point at about 6pm.
